Nicolai studied Information Systems Technology at TU Darmstadt with a focus on communication systems and technology. He wrote his bachelor's thesis on interference alignment in MIMO networks with relay, while his master's thesis – which he wrote at BCS lab (former name of SOS) – dealt with a non-Markovian extension of continuous-time Bayesian networks.
He joined SOS lab as PhD student in December 2018. Since then, he works on non-Markovian jump processes in the context of gene regulation and on refined models for simulation and inference in genetic circuits.
